Myla's Kittens

All Myla's kittens have now gone to their new homes.

We mated our lovely Oriental Longhair girl, Mylynn PowdernPaint, to Gemba LeviDenim a blue point Balinese boy.  On 18th March, 2008 Myla gave birth to 6 healthy kittens, all of which are Balinese (pointed Oriental Longhairs under GCCF rules).  We have 3 boys and 3 girls.  Because Balinese kittens, like Siamese, are born all white their colour points develop gradually, so initially it is not possible to identify their colours.  Anyone interested in this litter will have to be patient to see exactly what we have in terms of colour, for now it looks like this:

1 Red Point boy - reserved.

2 Cream Point boy - reserved.

3 Lilac Point boy - reserved.

4 Blue Point girl - reserved

5 Blue Point girl - reserved.

6 Blue Tortie Point girl - staying here with us.

18th March

A straight forward labour led to the birth of 6 pure white kitties.

20th March

Myla clearly has good quality milk as her babies are piling weight on.  All is well.

23rd March

Colour points are starting to develop but it is still early days.

25th March

One week old today and 2 or 3 of our babies are starting to open their eyes.  So far so good.

28th March

Our lovely litter of Bali's are today 10 days old and finally all the eyes are open.  They still look a bit unappealing, so white and uncharacteristic with pink noses and pale eyes but these kittens will turn out to be so undeniably cute, just give them a few weeks.  Still I can't help but take photos of them anyway because I love them.  They have given me no worry at all so far, and long may that continue.  Another update will follow next Tuesday when they are 2 weeks old.

1st April

Two weeks old today and our Bali babies are all doing fine.  They are becoming quite alert now and like to watch me as I busy around in their room.  They are very pretty kittens, I think.  They all have such long legs, low ears and fluffy coats, not to mention the big, chubby tummies from all the milk guzzling they do.  I've had a bit of a revelation this week as one of the boys turned out to be a girl, which means we only have the 2 boys.  The girl in question is going to be a dilute point (blue or lilac) and if she turns out to be a tortie as well she'll be the kitten staying on with us.  Mummy Myla is super protective over her babes but is otherwise doing fine.  She has regained her pre-pregnancy figure and looks just great with her soft, glossy coat.  Here's the picures, we start first with the boys then the girls.

8th April.

Our lovely little babies are now 3 weeks old and are becoming too curious to stay in their kitten box for much longer.  They are always trying to climb out but the step down is still a little too big.  We bring them into the louge and take them out for a 'run' around, which they seem to enjoy.  They are mad for licking everything at the moment.  Just like human babies they discover the world around them by putting everything to the mouth.  So they lick carpet and walls and fingers, it's kind of cute but also worrying sometimes.  They are quite a size now and the coats are really coming on as are their colours which I'm pretty certain about now.  There is still a doubt over the lilac point kitten, not the colour but the sex:  first he was a boy then a girl now I just don't know.  There looks like there is a little space for testicles but none have decsended yet, so I'm still unsure.  Hopefully by next week I'll know for certain.

15th April

Aaaaggghhh they are everywhere and think they can keep up with the big kids.  At least they have their wobbly tummies off the floor now they are walking properly.  Seriously though, having 12 kittens charging around the place can be quite hazardous.  They'll have to move into the cat room for at least part of the day. Needless to say they are gorgeous and love people now so it is hard to get anything else done with so many fur babies needing cuddles.

I haven't even begun to wean these little dudes as Ola's kittens are taking up enough time on that score and these babies are still doing so well on Mum's milk.  But they are interested so I'll start soon with them.  Here are the 4 week photos:

22nd April

5 weeks old, my little treasure and these babies are really coming into their own. They spend most of their day with Ola's kittens now so have to be tough to cope.  They are mad for action and people alike, so obviously I'm very pleased with their social progress.  Super confident, what more can I ask for?  I mentioned (and thought) last week that I would start on the track to weaning these little guys but somehow the week has just gone by and still I haven't done anything about it.  It's not a problem at all as many kittens don't take an interest in solid food until around 6 weeks, so I'm taking the laid back approach with them and Myla still seems to be doing fine feeding them herself.  Having said that, a couple of them have been licking the left overs of the older kittens' din dins so they are on their way.  They have also started to toilet outside of the nest.  I've found a few little puddles and poos dotted around so need to give them the scent for the litter tray.

Finally I've decided on names for them and so we have:

Artic Fox - red point boy.  His type is lovely, very Siamese but he'll have quite a smooth, scant coat like his mum.  He is really tranquil and relaxed.

Peachy Ghost - cream point boy.  He is also a very pretty boy with a rather short coat.  As personality goes he's a little more in the centre of the action than his darker pointed brother.

Purple Mist - lilac point boy.  Again, like his brothers, a little short on the coat but a beauty all the same.  He is extremely outgoing, nosy and bold - the leader of the pack.

Polar Bear - blue point girl. She has always been the chubby kitten though she is starting to slim off a little now.  She is very curious and cuddly too.  She is nice and fluffy and I think she'll end up with a super coat.

Snow Cloud - blue point girl is actually very similar to her sister mentioned above but slightly lighter in the points and a little more refined looking.  She also has a good coat.  She is gentle and loving.

Turtle Dove - blue tortie point girl has wonderful ear tufts and good coat like her sisters.  She is my little girl and seems to know it, very loving and confident.

29th April

This lovely litter continues to blossom and I have to say I love spending time with them they are all just so cuddly.  I think they are the prettiest litter we've ever had too.  They are losing their chubby bellies now as Myla doesn't feed them so much and of course they are much more active.  I have introduced kitten food this week and they are now all tucking in.  They continue to be messy little monkeys though as they still don't seem to have the hang of the litter tray.  Still they love being handled even by my daughter, who can be a little rough at times.  They've lost all their scratchyness thankfully.  I've taken quite a lot of photos this week but truthfully they don't do the kittens justice.  Their features are so pretty, their coats so soft and their eyes so very blue, which is sadly lost with flash photography.

7th May

7 weeks old and suddenly Myla's babies seem a lot older.  They are sharing their apartment with Ola's kittens now and I just tend to see them all as the kittens rather than the biggies and littlies.  All are successfully weaned, some are greedier than others.  Bear and Fox are big kittens reflecting their appetites and Snow Cloud and Misty are bit smaller as they were slower to catch onto the merits of chicken. Ghost and Dove are somewhere inbetween.   They are all going good, full of energy and purrs.  Misty is particularly funny as he seems to think he belongs to Ola's litter as he can always be found cuddled up with them rather than his real siblings.

They differ so much in their looks now as the blue point kittens are really starting to darken, not just at the points but in their general coat colour.  Bear, Snow Cloud and Dove are all so bluey, whereas the boys are still very white/cream in their bodies.  Unfortunately I doubt this shows up on the pics as again all taken with flash.

13th May

8 weeks old and these babies grow more beautiful as each week passes.  Unfortunately it has been really hard to get a decent photograph of any of them this week as they all move so fast.  They are everywhere, into everything and each time I see them all cuddled up together and looking sweet I dash for the camera and they get all excited and rush out to see me.  So lots of action shots this week I'm afraid.  They are due to be vaccinated tomorrow, which I'm not particularly looking forward to but it must be done.  Little Misty, who is so beautiful, is catching up on the growing as he has really developed his appetite and assertiveness around food, which is great.  Bear needs to be held back a little as she is soooo big and far too round in the tummy, greedy guts that she is.  But all in all they are all coming along beautifully.

21st May

9 weeks old and all is well.  We went for first vaccinations last week and it was a much smoother experience than with the Oriental kittens, who were extremely naughty. All the babies checked out perfectly on their health check, in fact the head vet was complimenting me on their awesome condition! Not one kitten made even a squeak when injected.  Either they are all well behaved little darlings or the vet has a very skilled hand.  Personally I prefer to commend my kittens.

Finally all are using litters trays for toileting.  It has taken some time with this litter but everyone has it now, which saves a lot of time when cleaning up.  They are so adorable in the morning, they sleep in the cat room at night so when I go to let them out first thing they all hurl themselves at the fence, climbing it while screeching, so desperate for my attention. But once they are out, it is not me they want but the freedom of the house where they can get up to more mischief.

Ghost again, looking so lovely I had to include this one...

1st June

Very late with this week's entry but I think I can be forgiven as I was otherwise occupied with my new baby daughter.  It was quite interesting being away from the kittens for 5 days because when I returned they had all  grown so much, and in more ways than one... my sister had been feeding them as well as my husband and they have all gained a little excess weight!  Added to their pot bellies there was a further blight on their appearence as my husband had fed the kittens a load of chicken, without the skin removed.  It was a very greasy meal and after grooming each other they all looked awful with oily, sticky coats.  I thought I might have to wash them but I guess they groomed it all away by themselves because they are looking ok again now.

It is final vaccination day this Tuesday, I hope it will be as uneventful as last time.  All the kittens but one, Bear, are now reserved and will be going to their new homes from next weekend.  It will suddenly seem so quite without them.  This will be my final entry in their log so I think an update on each individual is due.  Firstly Mist, the little guy with the BIG personality.  He's the smallest of the bunch but what does actual size matter when you believe yourself to be enormous? He's full of mischief.  Fox on the other hand is the biggest kitten and I expect him to attain a very good size as an adult.  He's quiet and sometimes shy with people but loves playing with his siblings.  He is becoming more cuddly though and today got a really big purr going on my lap.  Ghost his similar looking brother is sleek and medium sized.  He is more forward than Fox and enjoys human attention whilst still being a very playful and boisterous boy.  He is a well balanced chap, I think.  As for the girls, little Snow Cloud is very gentle, quiet and reserved.  I think she finds it hard competing for attention within the litter and my guess is that she will really come into herself in her new home when there will be more attention lavished on her.  Like the other girls she enjoys cuddles.  Bear, the biggest girl, is very cuddly and purry and will make a super lap cat.  Because she is a good size she can really hold her own with the boys and is very playful and curious.   She is a very pretty girl with her soft features and lovely coat so I'm surprised she'll be the last to find a home.  Finally Dove, my own girl.  I could have homed her 10 times over as she is so people orientated and anybody's lap will do.  She is an appealing little character and we'll enjoy having her here very much.  Look out Naib there is serious competition for lap space!
